The Diary of a caregiver hopefully evokes good responses from us.

And we know that God works all things together for the good of those who love Him, who are called according to His purpose.

Day 1: Jane and I went out shopping, had a nice evening meal and had an enjoyable evening with the kids who took turns in jumping on each of our laps.

Day 2: Last night Jane was twisting and turning a lot. She seems a bit agitated today. I am off to work, a bit concerned, but nothing major. Will drop off kids to school. Midday, ring Jane to see how she is doing. She sounds incoherent and confused. Speak to my boss and ask if I can leave as wife not feeling too good again. Come home, Jane is pacing the floor, has not even eaten her breakfast. I put her to bed. Found out she had forgotten to take her medications. Give her the daily dose. Spend time reading the Bible and praying.

Day 3: Jane seems a little better. Give her the medication. Call mom and ask if she can pop round during the day and keep an eye on Jane while I go to work and take the kids to school.

Day 7  Jane says she wants to go to the zoo. It is midnight. She is weepy and making a scene. We’ll have to go to the doctor’s tomorrow first thing.

The Diary of a caregiver brings insight to a little appreciated role in a lot of our relationships.

Day 10: Jane has been admitted in ‘the’ hospital two days now. She is sedated. Kids are missing their mother.

Day 17: Jane is home now. The dosage has been upped. The side effects make her so sleepy and dopey. The kids just want to play with their mother. Jane is too tired and not very playful. I burn the kids’s dinner and they are crying. I am exhausted. Work pressures are also mounting as well. When will this nightmare end?”

Caring for one challenged with mental illness can be very draining and daunting. We must however remember that Jesus is the ultimate Caregiver. He cares for all 7 billion people in the world…so much. He never gets tired, neither does He complain. And for His kids, He says we are the apple of His eye, looking out for us, there for us through thick and thin.

When you are at the end of your tether, remember that the Holy Spirit is there to be your Helper, Comforter, Encourager, Strengthener and everything else you want Him to be. Get to know this Holy Spirit. Buy books about Him and develop an intimate relationship with Him. He is the One you can phone for a compassionate ear at midnight when Jane wants to go to the zoo. He is the One who you can enlist to strengthen you when the boss has given you an unrealistic deadline when the very boss knows all too well that you have domestic challenges including burning the kid’s dinner!

Pen down your experience. As a Caregiver you may be surprised as to the people whose lives are made better as a result. The Diary of A Caregiver is inspirational

Meditations for the day

2 Peter 1:2-4

Grace and peace be multiplied unto you in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord, as His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us by glory and virtue, by which have been given to us exceedingly great and precious promises, that through these you may be partakers of the divine nature , having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.
