“.. Do not go to bed angry. Don’t give the devil that kind of foothold in your life

Paul wrote to the church at Ephesus. These words has passed down through time.

do not go to bed angry

Sleep researchers at the University of Massachusetts Amherst found support for Paul’s advice. Their study concludes that your negative emotional response to a traumatic event is reduced if you stay awake afterwards than if you go to sleep shortly afterwards.

Sleep preserves and enhances unpleasant emotional memories.

Their experiments involved 68 healthy female and 38 male (total 106) young adults between 18 and 30 years old.

The study points to the practice that you should try to resolve angry feelings before you go to sleep.  When you do, the study shows, you can have a less instinctively emotional reaction in the morning.

The studies also found that sleep had significant effects on participants’ memories and feelings.  Strong recognition for pictures was better following sleep compared with waking moments.  The participants maintained a strong impression of their initial negative emotions following a period of sleep compared to a period of wakefulness.

Going to bed angry shows that this is one thing NOT to sleep over!

A strong conclusion was drawn from the study that sleep’s effect on the emotion is independent of its effect on memory.
