Depression Awareness Week – Week’s roundup

It has been an interesting week.  Here at Defying Mental Illness, we do not take lightly issues surrounding mental illness, its stigma and discrimination.  That is why for Depression Awareness Week, we fully participated bringing you daily blogs on issues surrounding depression.

Depression awareness week
What is your perception of people challenged with depression?

We started the week with 5 Steps To Beating The Monday BluesThis is a something we all know so well.  It is Monday again and not many people are endearing to the first day of the week.  Monday Blues is not necessarily depression, yes we know, but we thought it good to break into the subject with something that has affected at least all of us at one point of our lives.   How do we avoid that Monday feeling without drowning our anxieties with energy drinks in a desperate attempt just to stay awake?  One of the first points we looked at was waking up with a sense of purpose.  Knowing that the world needs us, will at least get us dragged out of bed…on the right side, we hope!

On Tuesday, we delved into depression with the rather controversial What Depression is Not.  Some think depression is sadness.  But is it?  Are people who have been through more traumatic situations like war and abuse more prone to depression than others?

Wednesday was an interesting one.  One of our most heartfelt blogs on Defying Mental Illness.  Looking at the subject of depression and suicide, it was a call to action for those struggling with suicidal thoughts and friends and families of these, to act NOW!  If this is YOU, please go over to that blog right now.  We need to reduce the suicidal rates worldwide.  Every life is so precious.

Chuck gave us something to think about on Thursday.  Chronicling his journey with mental illness with started with psychotic depression in the blog Psychotic Depression – My journey,  Chuck exposes us to  a world that many may not know exist.  Without a tear choking account, Chuck’s account is nonetheless refreshing.  Once again, I always gain strength from Chuck’s experience.  If someone can go to hell and come back, and take us to heaven, it is Chuck!

We make it to the end of the work week with some Friday inspiration.  This week’s 60 Seconds Motivation Building,  we look at Depression and Stigma.  Seems so unfair how stigma always go hand in hand with depression making it hard for those challenged with depression.  This is why there is so much importance with Depression Awareness Week and similar awareness campaigns.  The more people that gain knowledge the less the stigma and corresponding discrimination.

Finally our ‘Sunday Sermon’ blog  tomorrow will be brought to you by the right Reverend himself, Chuck.  Only joking… he is not a man of the collar.  However, his insight on the subject of Elijah’s depression will inspire, motivate and encourage you, as he tells me.  And I believe him.  He always has something deep to say that touches hearts.  Make sure you don’t miss it!

Please share any of the posts this week with family and friends and get people more aware of mental illness and in particular, the hot topic this week of depression.  Blessings always.
