Mental Illness quotes that make us think!

Prejudice is a great time saver. You can form opinions without having to get the facts.’ E.B. White

How true.  It is so easy to be prejudiced about what we don’t know.   At Defying Mental Illness, our vision is to put a full stop to stigma and prejudice of mental illness.

Re-education is so important

And one way to stop prejudice is through re-education. You see, it is not that people are not educated.

I am the first to put my hand up that I do not know everything about everything, even mental illness. There are lots of things I do not know even in this subject even though it is close to my heart and we work with aspects of mental health and mental illness every day.

But it can be very easy to make the wrong conclusions about what we don’t know.

Sometimes, as people, we have not got all the facts, or we have the wrong facts or part of the facts. And because of this, the wrong pictures are formed in our thinking and mindset about things like mental illness.

And when we have the wrong pictures, we react to things differently, even to the extent of making statements that offend, or cause prejudice.

We have a responsibility to re-educate

Lemony Snicket said Just because you don’t understand it, doesn’t mean it isn’t so.

Sometimes people say the wrong things because they don’t understand.

Like some people think sadness and depression are the same thing and will use the words interchangeably.

Just because you don’t understand gravity, does not mean it does not exist.  There is always a possibility that what we don’t know is true.  In the case of gravity, walking off the edge of a building may be too late to know gravity does exist!

So those that know more are there to re-educate those that don’t. We all have a personal responsibility than to keep pointing fingers and getting upset because someone made an off statement.
