It’s rare for anyone to have perfect mental health. Life will serve us blows to our ego that can affect our sanity even if we have every intention to live a full life. However, faith does lead to victory.

There are many things that we commonly do or go through that slowly erode our mental health such as comparing ourselves to other people, telling ourselves that we’re not good enough, obsessing over what other people say about us, having family disputes, bullying from school or work, the pain we may feel from losses like the loss of a loved one, family problems, or feelings of isolation like what is happening now where most of us can’t meet family or friends.

There are many factors that lead to the deterioration of mental health that when unchecked can lead to mental illness. Medicines may help but it’s been shown that faith and spirituality can have a favorable impact on mental health.

Here are 4 reasons that show having something to believe in may help overcome challenges:

1 Roadmap

Most of the world’s religions and faiths have core teachings. They are a guide on how to live a full and meaningful life. It usually teaches about compassion, life lessons, forgiveness, and gratitude which are mostly not taught at school. Some may consider these as best practices and they contribute to life goals that most of us aspire for.

2 Unity with surroundings

Sometimes we may feel out of sync with life. This feeling of disunity may stop us from being our best selves or finding ways to have a better life. It prevents us from finding the good that life has to offer and makes us closed-off from possibilities. If we sometimes experience losses in life, this sense of belonging can be supportive and help promote recovery.

3 Reduces anxiety

Having faith helps us to feel that we are not alone. With loneliness, you may feel you have no other choice but to keep going or to just stop everything altogether and quit whatever we’re doing. When we’re anxious we may make decisions and actions that we might regret in the future. We make the best decisions when we are calm and faith can help us achieve that feeling of calm.

4 Sense of community

Most faiths have the practice of communal worship. You may not connect well with people from school or work but being in a community of similar or same faith can have a positive mental and physical impact on your health. We all want to belong. It is a fundamental need for every human being. Research has shown that a lack of it may lead to smoking, high blood pressure, and obesity.

Feeling connected to other people also lowers rates of depression and anxiety. When we feel love and a sense of belonging that is when we do better. Children perform better at school. A person may do better work.

Some of us may be facing mental challenges or even mental illness but with encouragement, the right resources, support, and faith there is hope. We all have something to live for – our goals, our family, our life’s mission. Life events may give us some punches. We may get bruised but having faith can guide us, calm us, and give us the direction to overcome our struggles.
